BT Yahoo! Broadband

BT Yahoo! Broadband

BT Total Broadband is the United Kingdoms largest ISP and currently serves over 4.5 million broadband users. Yahoo has recently teamed up with the UK entity to form BT Yahoo!.

As a member of this service users get premium access to yahoo services that would otherwise cost them out of pocket.

Members can choose to use either Internet Explorer 8, 7, 6 or the BT Internet Browser. Either one will get the job done, but people have do have their preferences.

At the time of this writing you can sign up and get the first month of service for just £1. Assuming you are happy and keep the service you will be billed £15.99 a month thereafter. You can do what you want and it includes 150 hours a month, or 5 hours a day.

They also offer a Pay as You Go plan that is 1p per minute, as well as a 5.5p setup fee. This option great for persons not wanting to use the internet often. If you check your email once a month this might be for you. If you travel a lot and are not sure when you’ll be this would also be prime.

Both packages include up to 11 email addresses, pop-up blocker, decent parental control features, virus protection, and 2GB of storage.

Does Yahoo Obey NoFollow Tags?

Yahoo Nofollows

Yahoo Nofollows

Here is a quick question for you to think about. Does Yahoo obey NoFollow tags? I think the answer is no, they do not, and here is why.

The basic point of the rel=”nofollow” tag is to prevent sites from passing linkjuice to external sites. This is most often implemented in blogs and forums as a method to prevent spammers from gaining ranking by simply posting for the sole reason of boosting their search rankings.

Google it seems does not count these links as valid, but Yahoo does. How can you find this out? Well you can do this by checking the backlinks in the search engines results using certain syntax, or by going to http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/search?p=yourdomain.com

You will see listed in the yahoo site explorer links from pages that have obvious nofollow tags. That’s about all the proof I need right there.

The next question would be, does Yahoo count these as valid links when giving out search results. This one is a bit more tricky, and I’m not sure if the links count. According to what data I’ve seen in the past few years I would loosely say “yes”.

Google Hijack Virus Removal

kapersky

I had at some point picked up the Google Hijack Virus and was unable to get rid of it until now. This nasty thing does a redirect on Google search result links about 50% and had prevented me from going past page 1 on Google search results. Here is how I fixed it.

I had tried booting into safe mode and running Hijack This, Adaware, Spybot S&D, AVG, ComboFix and a host of other apps with no resolution. I then tried to do a system restore back to any earlier date, that didn’t help either. This thing was becoming a nasty little booger.

So What Is the Fix?
If you have this annoying thing this is what you can do to remove it.

  1. Turn off System Restore (right click my computer, select the system restore tab, put a check in the box that says “turn off system restore”)
  2. Boot into Safe Mode (restart your computer and tap F8 repeatedly while the computer boots, a screen will come up, choose Safe Mode with Networking)
  3. Download Kapersky Here, then choose all options and scan. Delete anything bad that it finds.
  4. Restart your computer, turn on System Restore

there you go, those are the exact steps that fixed my computer finally. We hope this helps your issue as well.

New Solar Systems Detected

Kepler mission

Kepler mission

While driving to work this morning I heard a very interesting story that got me a bit excited. Several scientist / astronomers have found 2 new solar systems, each solar system contains and earth like planet at least in size. One planet is just 40% larger, and the other is 50% larger than earth.

Why is this such a big deal? Well not because we are going to send humans there, as the planets are light years away, but because until now scientist were unable to detect planets any smaller than Jupiter or Saturn. Planets outside our solar system are near impossible to see at the moment because they do not radiate or give off much light. Most of the light that would be given off is reflected light from there star, and in contrast to the star the planet is around a 1 billion times less bright.

So scientist recently have discovered planets by using the “wobble method”. I’m not sure that is the name of the method, but this is how it works. When planets, especially very large planets orbit a star, the star is slightly tugged in the direction of the planet. By measuring these wobbles over large periods of times scientist can determine the orbit and size of a planet. Large planets pull the star further than smaller planets. Using this technique scientist have found some 500+ planets in the last 10 or so years.
