What is a 3G Network?

A 3g network is a step up from the older 2g data networks. Basically 3g is short for 3rd Generation, 3g just sounds cooler, and faster.

When a phone company says “With the nation’s largest 3g network”, it sounds better than “With the nation’s largest 3rd generation network”.

3g for most of us is just a buzz word that we have heard on a t.v., radio, or internet commercial from one of the many cellular companies out there. But what does 3g really mean for us the end user?

3g Networks services include, but are not limited to;

  1. wide-area wireless voice
  2. mobile internet access
  3. video calls
  4. mobile t.v.
  5. tethering

To me the 2 that stick out are the mobile t.v.(#4), and video calls(#3). These are both made possible by the increased data transfer speed of the network.

Another budding technology that may be of interest to you is what I would call laptop tethering(#5). Basically you connect your computer to your phone and share your phones internet service. This means you can surf the internet at the park, on the beach, anywhere.

Used correctly could do away with home internet service providers, as users may just piggyback off their wireless cell phones.Sounds cool right? That’s another great feature of the 3g network.
